What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by enlarged or oversized male breast tissue. The condition, commonly referred to as “man boobs”, has many potential causes, including genetics, hormonal imbalance, certain medical conditions and medication use. Gynecomastia is often associated with emotional discomfort and low self-esteem. It is not uncommon for men with gynecomastia to withdraw or avoid social activities and intimacy because they are embarrassed by the appearance of man boobs.
Gynecomastia cannot be treated with diet or exercise. The only proven and effective way to treat the condition is through male breast reduction surgery. The procedure removes excess breast tissue from the chest area. The remaining breast tissue is re-sculpted and loose skin is removed to create a flatter and more masculine chest. A more conservative approach involves only using liposuction techniques to carefully break up and remove excess fatty tissue from the chest.
Miles Banwell favours a minimally invasive technique – removing the fatty component using liposuction, and the glandular component with a small shaver device that utilises the same tiny (5mm) access incisions as the liposuction cannula. In this way scars are kept to an absolute minimum and are typically barely visible.
Alternatively, a more traditional approach can be used to remove the glandular component, although this does generate a hemi-circumferential scar on the lower nipple areola. In cases where gynaecomastia is very marked, then there may also be an excess of skin contributing to the problem. In these cases Miles removes this skin and typically conceals the resulting scar in the natural crease running under the lower edge of the main chest muscle.
Recovering from Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Male breast reduction is performed under general anesthetic, with a one-night stay in the hospital after your procedure. In the following weeks, patients are required to wear a lightweight gynecomastia compression vest. Patients are able to return to work after two weeks and full physical activity in six weeks.
Following male breast reduction surgery, many men report feeling a boost of self-confidence. Clothes fit better and patients are no longer self-conscious about taking off their shirts in public. Skin irritation and rashes under the breast also resolve thanks to the removal of excess skin and fat.
